Bittersweet news…

I have big news! I am going to be taking an extended break from teaching yoga. I have been teaching yoga since 2009, a year after I gave birth to my first little, and I have had the privilege of teaching Pre/Postnatal Yoga through the City of San Marcos Parks and recreation since 2011. Of the hundreds of families that have joined me in class, thank you!

This was a very difficult decision as this class continued to grow and flourish. I will be taking this time to focus back on my own health and family, and continue to work full time in public health. While I am on leave, I will be utilizing the blog more, and will have more tips and information for you here about yoga, birth, and parenting. I am still in town, and am available to talk and meet up with any of my neighbors.

I am hopeful that someone may be interested in picking up this class, but I was not able to find the right person before the fall schedule was set. The city would love to see this class continue, and I would love  to put that person in touch with the right people to get this class back on the city’s schedule. Please contact me if you are interested.

In the meantime, thank you so very much for allowing me to be part of your pregnancy! I look forward to seeing you and your family around town at the park, grocery store, ball fields, etc. The soul in me is privileged to have been here with the soul(s) within you…Namaste.

Embolden Breastfeeding

KPBS health reporter Kenny Goldberg recently highlighted breastfeeding barriers women in San Diego experience in a three-part health report series. The first series highlighted barriers experienced in health care system including access to professional lactation support immediately after birth. The second series highlighted cultural barriers including the lack of encouragement from family, friends and the community. The last series highlighted barriers experienced in the work place including adequate accommodations to pump.

Prenatal Yoga in San Marcos opens up the second health report on breastfeeding support, and one of our beautiful new moms, Pricila Marquez, was interviewed sharing her recent experiences as a first time mom supporting her infant son with breastfeeding. She explains that breastfeeding is a lot harder than it looks, and that it has taken much more from her than expected. Prenatal yoga provides new moms weekly encouragement and empowerment as they are getting ready for their little one to join earth side. This includes breastfeeding support discussions that include preparations needed to breastfeed, recommendations of independent international board certified lactation consultants, and resources for lactation support groups both in person and online.

Kenny Goldberg’s reporting highlights key health issues for breastfeeding support – breastfeeding doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It needs the support of the community whether it be: the care providers that assist with best practices and provide solutions; the cultural shift necessary from community that breastfeeding doesn’t have to be difficult and to provide support and encouragement for moms to breastfeed whenever and where ever; and the absolute necessary accommodations needed to support mothers returning back to work. The major take away from this health reporting is that health benefits of breastfeeding are not only for mother and baby – breastfeeding builds a healthier community.

Ringing in 2016

Winter/Spring 2016
The city of San Marcos has published and delivered the latest edition of their quarterly magazine called 360. Inside of it is a host of great information about San Marcos happenings from how to prepare for El Nino to the latest road upgrades to economic development updates. The city’s parks and recreation guide begins on page 11, which has a wonderful variety of activities created for all ages that range from family swim programs to senior computer classes to art shows and concerts.

There are so many wonderful programs through the city’s park and recreation, and most of these programs offer the first class free – pre/postnatalyoga included. Come try out classes, and feel free to contact the recreation staff if there is a particular class you are looking for – perhaps, you may even be willing to instruct.

My family was fortunate enough to be on the front cover of the recreation guide because the city is highlighting the instructors involved in the recreation programs. I have been teaching prenatal yoga through the parks and recreation department for the past six years. I love teaching here, and my belief is that classes should be accessible to everyone and should be an opportunity for a community to flourish. The city of San Marcos Parks and Recreation delivers great programs, and are wonderful collaborators. I am truly blessed to live where I work. Check out the programs, check out the facilities, and meet some of your neighbors.

Special thank you to my prenatal yoga model, Tania, and my photographer, Christine, for the fabulous prenatal yoga photos both in the recreation guide and on this website.

Free Trial Class - Sign up!

San Marcos Parks and Recreation are such wonderful people to work with! A while back they tried a couple of promotional opportunities to draw students into classes, and they finally found a great fit with the “FREE TRIAL for first time students” opportunity.

This trial class provides interested students the opportunity to try their first class for free without committing to an entire session. This opportunity is for new students to that particular class. For instance, if you are new to prenatal/postnatal yoga, then you qualify for the free trial.

How To Sign Up for Free Trial Class
  1. Confirm that the class is being held the day that you would like to come. This can usually be accomplished by calling or emailing the instructor.
  2. Arrive a few minutes before the start of class to fill out paperwork. The city requires students to fill out a liability release form prior to participating.
That’s it! Try as many trial classes that the city offers. Most importantly, come and try out our class: Pre/Postnatal Yoga for FREE!

5th Anniversary Summer Excitement!

I am so excited about this summer season of yoga offerings through the City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation. First off, I am celebrating my 5th year with the City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation. I have had the privilege of teaching prenatal yoga through this wonderful community center since 2010, and this would not be possible without all of the wonderful students who have joined us throughout the years. Thank you so very much for your patronage, your referrals, and your beautiful practice!

To celebrate this 5th anniversary, I have several special announcements with regards to this season’s classes.

Toddler/Preschool Family Yoga

First off, Toddler/Preschool Family Yoga is back! It’s been on hiatus for the past two years, and I am thrilled to be offering it through the Parks and Recreation. A few items to note:

  • Classes are held once a month: This is on purpose, so that busy families can fit a family yoga class into their summer schedule. It is held on the second Saturday of the month.
  • The first class is on May 9th. Are you signed up yet? Here are 5 EZ Ways to sign up for classes.
  • Class price is per family: yes, that’s right! Per family. $14 drop-in or $43 for all FOUR classes. Remember they are once a month, so this covers you through August!
  • Family: You might ask “what constitutes a family for registration purposes?” Well, exactly what that means a family. Better yet – your family! A typical family is two parents, a toddler/preschooler, and an older or younger sibling, but your family is your family. Perhaps, grandma wants to come or you have four kiddos – bring them! You just need to register your toddler/preschooler through ActiveNet.

Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga

Prenatal Yoga got a bit of a title overhaul. We have officially expanded our yoga offerings to include postnatal yoga. I have always welcomed postnatal mamas to join class and this makes it official. In addition here are a few things to note:

  • Partners/birth providers: register together, and they will receive a 20% discount on their enrollment package. It is beautiful way for partners to actively engage with the expectant mama. This offer extends to the expectant mama’s birth providers, and includes doulas, midwives, etc.
  • Punch card: the city is now providing an opportunity for a five-class punch card. This replaces the drop-in format, but gives students the opportunity to come to classes whenever it works for their schedule. The punch card does expire at the end of the summer (8/31/15).
  • Six-week sessions: this year’s summer sessions are in a six-week format, unlike this past season’s five-week format. I point this out because the total cost per session is a bit more due to the extra class. The price-per-class remains the same.
  • Specials: On the newly updated webpage, specials are indicated under the classes, so that students can navigate the various opportunities that that city allows like the “First class FREE!”

Well, that’s just been a mouthful of great yogic fun to rock the summer. I hope you love all the additions and changes to the classes. The Parks and Recreation’s summer season kicks off on May 1st, and runs through August 31st, and there are 5 EZ ways to sign up for class.

It’s always been a privilege and honor to work with each and every one of you, so thank you for five wonderful years.

Joaquin's Birth Story...

It’s so humbling to work with such amazing women during the most transformative time in their lives. Many births stories have been shared with me throughout the years through conversation. I have shared my own birth stories in class impressing upon empowerment and informed decisions. Each of us have our own beautiful journey that we have or will embark upon. Below is the first written birth story shared with me, and reprinted with permission by my return student, Gracie DelMar. I am very excited to share her beautiful birth story and that of her son, Joaquin. This is her journey…

Joaquin's Birth Story
As soon as Joaquin Tre DelMar was born I knew I had to share his birth story because I am so excited to share about God's faithfulness and strength. We know that we all have our own individual stories and they can be ever changing – so I sure am excited to add this to MY story!

When I found out l was pregnant with our third son, Joaquin Tre, we were really surprised and really excited. Early in the pregnancy it was put on my heart to just focus on worshipping and giving thanks to the Lord for this surprise miracle and also to do everything I could to make the labor and delivery worshipful and peaceful. I knew there would be a challenge to having a worshipful labor and delivery because if I could have my way, I would have had a room full of my best girlfriends reading scripture and praying over me so it was constant and right there in the room with me through the intensity of labor. But I knew how my husband would react to that idea so I knew I had to brainstorm a different plan. I told my doula my wants and challenges and we came up with the plan for me to make scripture cards and hang them around the house and meditate on them before going into labor. On delivery day the plan was to gather them as we headed to the hospital for my doula to read them through labor. To include the feeling of being surrounded by my close family and friends, strong women of faith in my life, I asked them to help me by sending me their favorite scriptures on strength and whatever they thought would be helpful, and I had a great collection of scriptures and prayers to meditate on prior to the big day!

Now fast forward to the big day!! Because both Grayson and Vincent's were 2.5/2 weeks early, I just knew it would be any day now and we were totally ready. Especially since I literally felt Joaquin drop so low the week before that I was completely immobile from the pain it caused my pelvis and hips. I recovered from the pelvic shock by Friday and was able to enjoy a sweet relaxing weekend with our little family of 4 before we became a family of 5. I decided to make plans and live life as usual for the week ahead. On Tuesday morning I was going on with my plans to hang out with my father in-law and run a wood shopping errand in Temecula for a home project. As the morning went on the low pressure increased, however, it was not painful. No biggie - I thought. As I got home from our morning outing at 11:15 am I checked in with my brother in law (also my neighbor) to confirm babysitting for that afternoon. Then my plan was, feed the boys lunch and then naps all around! I started making the boys lunch and just as I started to do that I started feeling contractions at pretty regular intervals. My mind went into panic -"what the heck is going on" - mode. As if I didn't know because I was in complete denial. I called my husband to let him know and told him to go to his lunchtime workout as planned at noon but to just keep the phone on him. Twenty minutes later I had fed the boys the fastest lunch ever. I scrambled to get them through nap time routines (all the while having consistent intense and painful contractions that I couldn't even time) and into bed, so I could start focusing on myself and what my body was telling me. I remember my blood starting to boil, being short fused with the boys and immediately feeling bad for it, because things were not going smoothly. I felt fear creeping in because I was alone, the boys were acting out like crazy, I had to make decisions for people to throw our labor plan into action and I was in a LOT of pain!! Finally about 12:30 pm I called my husband to come home. I still hadn't timed the contraction intervals but I just knew it was time. After gathering my thoughts I remembered the intentions I had set into motion for this labor. I wanted to focus all my energy on worshipping our Father. I was definitely not focused so I took a few seconds to pray to God to help me to remember that God made my body perfect to give birth to Joaquin and that God would provide all the strength and comfort I needed to get through this labor naturally. Once I finished praying I was able to finally get the boys down for their nap. I rushed into bed to start timing contractions, called in the babysitters, called in my Doula to make her way to my house and called my OB to get his advice on what to do. Since my contractions were about 6 to 5 minutes apart we decided it was time to get to the hospital to start at least 1 of 2 rounds of antibiotics I needed since I was group b strep positive. My husband walked in the door and because fear kept creeping in to take over I cried to him "I can't do this! And I want an epidural." Perplexed he looked at me, comforted and encouraged me, telling me I could do it and made sure he knew how to play the epidural request when we got to the hospital. He packed the bag (yup last thing on to-do list) and RUSHED this pregnant laboring mama into the car. Of course without the scripture and affirmation cards - but there was no time to turn around to get them. By this time it was 1:30 pm! All the way to the hospital I was so uncomfortable. So I put my head back and I asked my husband to pray over me and I listened to my worship radio station - Hillsong United - to again refocus my intentions. Thankfully it wasn't a really far drive and zero traffic so we made it to the hospital rather quickly. Got checked in to the hospital room and did the first cervix check and I was dilated 6 cm!! Holy smokes! That was going fast.

But there in that delivery room, as I was getting all settled in for Joaquin's big day, was when I truly felt God had totally stepped in and taken over. He blanketed our room with such an overwhelming feeling of peace. I could see in my minds eye with each contraction a scripture about strength, joy, and encouragement. At the end of each growingly intense contraction I would thank God, thank Him for giving me the strength and peace to endure the pain of each contraction and thank Him that I would never have to experience that contraction again. I praised Him for my body that He created so perfectly to birth Joaquin, quickly and efficiently. I know and understand that not every woman has such experiences.

About an hour later - during all the commotion of getting monitored, getting antibiotics, my doula arriving, and getting through contractions, I quickly dilated to 8 cm and my OB arrived. He didn't even bother checking me, and at this point, he, my nurse, my doula, and of course my hubby, wouldn't leave my side. They knew Joaquin was going to arrive any minute now. And still during all of this time it was like a group of friends sitting around catching up, cracking jokes, enjoying each other's company. My doula would pray over me and remind me of the perfection in God's plan for us. There was such a tranquility in the room. If it wasn't for the pain I was feeling with each contraction I wouldn't have guessed that in just a few moments I'd be pushing Joaquin out.

The next and final hour of labor flew by so fast, it felt like only one minute long. And in the midst of it there was a sudden shift in sensations of the contractions. The urge to push came upon me so quickly! As the shift occurred I could hear my yoga instructor's voice in my mind telling me to breathe through the pain and to relax my jaw and mouth because it would relax my pelvic floor and make for an easier push. I tuned in to the music playing in the background and my favorite song, "Oceans" by Hillsong United, was playing and I asked my doula to put it on repeat. I worshiped the Lord like I had never before! I focused on Him, listened to my body and gave in to the urge to push. I had been given some direction by my OB but I also felt my body just doing what it was made to do. Even with the intense pain I was feeling, the loudness of my pushing and the encouragement from the birthing team, there was a calm still in the room. I was thankful for the Lord who gave me strength and focus and took away the fear. Within moments I was holding Joaquin, a tiny little baby boy with the tiniest sounding cry - he was healthy and he was perfect! In that moment of holding Joaquin Tre for the first time - I instantly realized how amazing it was that I felt God was right there with us!! He was sitting in the room with us just covering my husband and I and our newest family member in His love and protection! I knew immediately that it was God there with us the whole time making it the most amazing birth experience. My goal was met. It was a worshipful, peaceful birth and the whole time God made his presence known. We know that God is present all the time with each brand new life that begins and we know that God always gives us all we need to get us through any situation. But me personally I never experienced such an obvious encounter with God! I was so moved by this I just had to share this testimony - this piece of my story! I hope that whoever reads this finds encouragement in being able to rely on HIS strength and just know that HE will provide all you NEED in HIS perfect time!

PCOS - why should you care?

Amanda Kohn: www.implementingdesignism.com

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a common hormonal disorder affecting at least 1 in 10 women. Estimates of greater occurrences could be as high 30% due to the rate of underdiagnoses and diagnostic indicator criterion differences.

Why should you care? Chronic diseases are the number one cause of death in the country for women with heart disease toping the charts. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer are all chronic conditions that are exacerbated by PCOS.
  • Women with PCOS are 4 -7 times more likely to have a heart attack
  • 50% of women with PCOS will have diabetes or pre-diabetes before the age of 40
  • Women with PCOS experience higher rates of cancers including endometrial
  • As well as depression and infertility

September is PCOS awareness month. Get to know the symptoms. Get tested. PCOS can be managed. Early awareness is key.

North County’s First Birth Center

It’s here! It’s here! I am so excited to share that it is here! My wonderful and amazing friend, Rochelle McLean, has opened the first freestanding birth center in North County San Diego: Babies in Bloom Birth and Wellness Center.

A freestanding birth center, according to the American Association of Birth Centers, “is a homelike facility…with a program of care designed in the wellness model of pregnancy and birth.” The Babies in Bloom Birth and Wellness Center boasts two amazingly-lovely homelike suites with freestanding tubs and interior designer décor that would be seen in hotels and model homes. Here are some lovely photos of the new center by Catie at Vuefinder Photography during the sneak peak last week. The Grand Opening celebration is on July 12 from 9am to 5pm, and will have many demos and giveaways.

The birth center is in addition to the already successfully Babies in Bloom Boutique that is home to many amazing, natural and hand-picked products as well as host to many classes. Her signature Lactation Lounges are free support groups where moms and babes are welcome to join in, weigh baby, ask questions to Ms. McLean, and commune with other breastfeeding mothers.

Ms. McLean is already a well-respected International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Child Birth Educator, and has been passionately working with pregnant women and new families since 1999. She opened the doors of Babies in Bloom in late 2003 from her home, where it has bloomed into the facility that you see today.

Register before July 1 - get $5 off

I have said it numerous times and I will say it again. I really LOVE working with the City of San Marcos!

Their Parks and Recreation team is just an awesome bunch to work with (thank you to Holly, Cathy, and team), and every season it just keeps getting better and better. From free preview classes, to prime time slots, to class packages, and keeping costs low and accessible to the residents of San Marcos.

This season the city of San Marcos is offering parks and recreation participants an “Early Bird” discount if they sign up at least 7 days prior to the first class of the season. Most of the season’s classes have already started for the summer session, BUT Prenatal Yoga’s first class is on Tuesday, July 8. This means that students still can get a $5 discount on their class package, if you sign up by July 1. This can be used for either the combo Tuesday/Thursday class held twice a week or for a once a week package on Tuesday or Thursday. Options are bountiful!

As always drop-ins are always available, and classes can be prorated if you can’t make it to the first class. I am so excited to bring these special opportunities to you and hope that you can join us for the whole session or at least one class. Bring your partner as they are always welcome to join us in class!

Namaste.
